Medical Records Review

14 hours CE credit: MCLE

Paralegals are often asked to summarize medical records, which first requires deciphering the contents of a medical chart. Students are introduced to the components of hospitals' and physicians' medical records and are provided with samples to gain practice in extracting the significant points. Basic medical terminology and common abbreviations are introduced. The role of the paralegal in formal and informal procedures for obtaining medical records is explained in depth, from both the plaintiff and defense perspectives. Ms. Appleby is co-author of Medical Records Review, Aspen Law & Business, 4th ed. It is recommended that students obtain a copy of this text prior to the class, but it is not a requirement for taking the course.CR/NC only.(no grade option).
