Enforcing Judgments


Once judgment is entered in a civil case, it is the responsibility of the client and/or their attorneys and paralegals to enforce that judgment. This course deals with the various devices used to enforce judgments, including abstracts of judgment, writs of execution, orders for debtor's examination, bank levies and wage garnishments. Statutes regarding legal collection practices are discussed along with calendaring of collection actions, form preparation and computation of post-judgment interest.CR/NC only (no grade option).

Prerequisite(s): POLS 300. Register by Mar 13 to avoid late fee. 14 hours CE credit: MCLE.

Instructor: Stephen Beckwith

Stephen M. Beckwith, J.D., is a sole practitioner with primary focus on plaintiffs litigation. Mr. Beckwith's practice includes representation of creditors such as contractors, financial institutions, auto dealerships and material suppliers to the construction industry. Further, he has incorporated many Sonoma County businesses and is general counsel to several of these businesses focusing on administrative and contract matters. He is a graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and received his law degree from Empire College School of Law. Mr. Beckwith is a member of the California and Sonoma County Bar Association and sits on the Sonoma County Bar Association Fee Arbitration Panel as a fee arbitrator between clients and their attorneys. In addition, Mr. Beckwith is a Sonoma County Pro Tem Judge and member of the Sonoma County Assessment Appears Board.
