Cross-Cultural Competence: Understanding Differences in Professional Practice


12 hours CE credit: MFT/LCSW; BRN
This course is designed for mental health professionals to gain an understanding of the dynamic interactions of diverse cultural perspectives as they relate to young children and their families, with a concentration on developing cultural competence in professional practice. Participants expand their awareness of the impact of their own cultural experiences on therapeutic relationships and learn to recognize these factors when planning and delivering services for children and families. Course content includes psychological principles and perspectives on culture, and fosters a deeper understanding of the cultural context related to normal and abnormal behavior, the effects of oppression and strategies for cross-cultural communication. Instructors employ a variety of teaching modalities emphasizing interactive, experiential learning designed to enhance student's understanding of cultural dynamics and to strengthen working relationships with children and families.

Instructor: Roberta Hunter

Roberta Hunter, B.A. in Human Development, has been adjunct faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College for over eight years, teaching a class entitled Issues in Diversity in the Child Development Department. She also runs an independent consultant business, Diversity by Design, which provides workshops on cultural competence throughout the greater Bay Area. Her background includes planning and implementing the education/training program at Community Action Partnership Head Start Program of Sonoma County for 15 years. She has extensive experience working with human service agencies, non-profit and community-based organizations, disenfranchised communities, groups interested in equity and social justice, educational institutions and community colleges.
