Spring 2010
Special Topics:Geography of the Pacific
In this course we study the geography of the Pacific Islands-a geographic realm that encompasses the regions of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Studying the geography of the Pacific is more than just knowing the locations of the countries and islands groups of the region. This course aims to introduce you to the methods of human geography. These tolls help to explain a range of events that have created the contemporary Pacific. We explore causes of transformation of the Island landscapes, and ongoing debates about environmental alterations, cultural identities, economic development, and globalization, and we situate the Pacific within broader circuits of interaction and exchange. Finally, we also take a critical look at issues affecting the region and stress the importance of understanding the diversity of Pacific Island environment and peoples.
