Winter 2010
Osher Lifelong Learning at Sonoma
See bottom of this page for a list of courses for this term. (Fee stated inside each course.)
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Sonoma State University is pleased to announce that we will be offering two courses in the Fall, at the Vintage House in Sonoma. OLLI at SSU is concluding its eighth year on campus, and it was central to the creation of a network of 123 similar programs in 49 states under the Osher Foundation umbrella. We plan to give two six-week courses a session at Vintage House and, like the program at SSU offer three sessions each year (Fall, Winter and Spring).
Courses will provide you with a university-level education, but there are no grades, tests, or required homework. You attend to expand your horizons and to keep your mind active. We plan courses across a number of topic areas in the Social Sciences, the Humanities and the Natural Sciences. We will be studying history, watching movies, discussing philosophy and religion, wrestling with contemporary issues, viewing and analyzing art, listening to music, and much, much more.
We will have an OPEN HOUSE here on Thursday, September 3rd from 10:00am-11: 30am at which you can hear the two instructors talk about their courses, ask questions about the courses or the program, and register on the spot.
The two offerings this Fall approach the concept of what it is to be human and the development of what we refer to as civilization from complimentary perspectives. On the one hand, Gloria Neumeier's "From Silk Road to Globalization: How Trade Shapes the World" (Thursdays,
9:45-11:45, September 24 to October 29) is a historical race through the human process of commerce and trade and their contributions to the ways we organize ourselves economically, politically and socially. On the other hand, Bill Garrett's "Evolution and Human Consciousness" (Wednesdays, 9:15-11:15am, September 23 to October 28) will investigate how inner awareness-psychological, religious, ethical and spiritual-is (and will continue to be) an outgrowth of the biological evolution of the mind.
You can register for one ($75) or both ($140) of these six-week courses by downloading a form online .
